Fr. Jarvis Sy OP "Dear everyone! A few days ago i got the website address of our homepage... and browsing through the names and pictures made me reminisce of the years past... my warm greetings to all! Fr. Jarvis Sy OP " - March 24, 2008"
What is your current occupation? I am a professed religious priest. I made my first profession 21 years ago (1987) and ordained to the Priesthood in 1991. Immediately after my ordination I was assigned to work as a missionary in Taiwan; and from here had been working as formator/ professor/ lecturer and spiritual adviser in Mainland China. I am presently the Regent of Studies in charge of supervising the intellectual life of the friars and their institutional as well as post-graduate studies. I am also the formator of our Chinese brothers.
Where are you based now?
I am presently residing in southern Taiwan: in a small village called Wanchin, in Pingtung Township. We are in charge of a Minor Basilica (the oldest Catholic church in the island) and the missions among the Paiwan tribe living in Taiwu Mountain just south of the village. I live with three other priest- brothers and I am the youngest.
If married, please tell us a bit about your family. I am not a family man but a man at the service of the family. Being celibate (that is staying single, unmarried) for the ministry, though I may not have the joys of the married state, we have other joys, like more freedom to serve and share my life with others. My “family” here would be the brothers whom I live and work here: priest-brothers from Europe and Asia who are working in the Dominican missions here in Taiwan and in the Far East and the Christians whom I serve.
What do you miss most about SJCS? The after school hour stays for decorating the classrooms; practices for programs, cheerleading competitions and passion play. The simple joys of sharing a snack at Ria’s or the queuing for junk food at the school canteen.
Any memorable SJCS moments you'd like share? Taking and sharing ideals and futures at the fifth floor dining hall… with all the glaring glasses around.
To date, what would you consider your proudest moment in life? Being able to persevere until now in my choice of life… (as I am the only one left in my novitiate batch). Witnessing my novices/ students make their profession and ordain to the priesthood. The feeling would be like seeing your sons/daughters in their toga, getting married or moving ahead in life.
Any regrets? No. Perhaps not being able to keep in touch with batchmates and old friends…though occasionally I may meet one or two on the streets, at the airport…with their loved ones at tow…
Words of wisdom you'd like to share with the batch. Life is so precious, let’s savor every moment of it by sharing it with others. Brief message: I had just browsed the pictures in the webpage and boy; Time really passed so fast. I confess except for some faces which I find familiar, it was hard to identify many of our classmates… I am happy to know that all are well and successful. Hope we can all meet sometime…. somewhere.
