Hedy Ong-Soliman

What is your current occupation?

Wife to Toto and mother to Ashley, Caitlin and Renee.

Where are you based now?

Southern California

If married, please tell us a bit about your family.

Toto and I just celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary.  Ashley is turning 20 this year, just finished her sophomore year of college.  She is working towards her Bachelor of Fine Arts.  Caitlin, 15, is in her first year of High School.  Renee is turning 10, and is in 4th grade.

What do you miss most about SJCS?

The annual School Fair, and always, the afternoon after the end of periodical exams. when friends and I would go catch a movie or just hang out. :-)

Any memorable SJCS moments you'd like share?

I remember getting my first report card red mark ( a 74 in Geometry) and thought it was the end of my world.  Looking back on it now, it was really no big deal in terms of the big picture.  The only time I use principles of Geometry now is when I bake a cake!

To date, what would you consider your proudest moment in life?

That would be, I hope, that I have raised my daughters to be kind, generous and fair human beings.

Any regrets?

I had hoped that I was able to gain more independence on my own before I got married.

Words of wisdom you'd like to share with the batch.

To keep the friendships we have made in school--they last forever.

Any ideas you might have to increase batch solidarity or suggestions to reconnect?

Just take the time to enjoy our batch site and to post your comments / suggestions.  Take the time to make the first call and invite an old classmate for coffee.  You never know what it will bring.

Current Batch President

What is your current occupation?

I am currently working in Cibeles Insurance Corporation, a family owned corporation engaged in the non-life insurance business. Our Head Office, where I am assigned, is located in Binondo, Manila; we also have a branch office in Davao City.

If married, please tell us a bit about your family.

My wife, Janet, and I got married in the year 2002. We have a daughter, Abigail Joy, who was born in the year 2005

What do you miss most about SJCS?

One thing I miss most about SJCS are those times when I went out bowling or playing basketball with friends as a way of celebrating the last day of our quarterly examinations. It gave me something to look forward to after a tough examinations week.

Any memorable SJCS moments you'd like share?

I guess one of the more memorable SJCS moments I have was the time our Model Platoon won in an interschool competition during our Junior year. All that hard work finally paid off with a great win in one tough competition.

To date, what would you consider your proudest moment in life?

Working hand in hand with my wife to try to raise our daughter in the best way possible is the proudest moment in my life. When my wife and I grow old, we want to be able to look back and say that we were able to help our daughter choose the right path in her life.

Any regrets?

If there is one regret I have right now, it has to do with my not being able to consistently keep in touch with our batchmates after graduating from high school. Great friendships formed during our school years are timeless and deserve the same attention and time we devote to our family and work.

Words of wisdom you'd like to share with the batch.

Aside from posting regular updates about our batch activities through our batch website/email group and aside from our reunions and gatherings, your present Batch Officers will try to think of activities or projects which hopefully will be additional opportunities for batchmates to reconnect with each other.

Fr. Jarvis Sy OP

"Dear everyone!   A few days ago i got the website address of our homepage... and browsing through the names and pictures made me reminisce of the years past... my warm greetings to all!   Fr. Jarvis Sy OP "

- March 24, 2008"

What is your current occupation?

I am a professed religious priest. I made my first profession 21 years ago (1987) and ordained to the Priesthood in 1991. Immediately after my ordination I was assigned to work as a missionary in Taiwan; and from here had been working as formator/ professor/ lecturer and spiritual adviser in Mainland China. I am presently the Regent of Studies in charge of supervising the intellectual life of the friars and their institutional as well as post-graduate studies. I am also the formator of our Chinese brothers.

Where are you based now?

I am presently residing in southern Taiwan: in a small village called Wanchin, in Pingtung Township. We are in charge of a Minor Basilica (the oldest Catholic church in the island) and the missions among the Paiwan tribe living in Taiwu Mountain just south of the village. I live with three other priest- brothers and I am the youngest.

If married, please tell us a bit about your family.

I am not a family man but a man at the service of the family. Being celibate (that is staying single, unmarried) for the ministry, though I may not have the joys of the married state, we have other joys, like more freedom to serve and share my life with others. My “family” here would be the brothers whom I live and work here: priest-brothers from Europe and Asia who are working in the Dominican missions here in Taiwan and in the Far East and the Christians whom I serve.

What do you miss most about SJCS?

The after school hour stays for decorating the classrooms; practices for programs, cheerleading competitions and passion play. The simple joys of sharing a snack at Ria’s or the queuing for junk food at the school canteen.

Any memorable SJCS moments you'd like share?

Taking and sharing ideals and futures at the fifth floor dining hall… with all the glaring glasses around.

To date, what would you consider your proudest moment in life?

Being able to persevere until now in my choice of life… (as I am the only one left in my novitiate batch). Witnessing my novices/ students make their profession and ordain to the priesthood. The feeling would be like seeing your sons/daughters in their toga, getting married or moving ahead in life.

Any regrets?

No. Perhaps not being able to keep in touch with batchmates and old friends…though occasionally I may meet one or two on the streets, at the airport…with their loved ones at tow…

Words of wisdom you'd like to share with the batch.

Life is so precious, let’s savor every moment of it by sharing it with others.

Brief message: I had just browsed the pictures in the webpage and boy; Time really passed so fast. I confess except for some faces which I find familiar, it was hard to identify many of our classmates… I am happy to know that all are well and successful. Hope we can all meet sometime…. somewhere.
